John Woolfe was one of motor racing’s great characters throughout the 1960s. A driver with considerable talent and boundless enthusiasm, he drove an eclectic range of cars throughout his career, from Top Fuel dragsters to sports prototypes. Woolfe is most associated with the Porsche 917, a car which in its early days was considered extremely difficult to handle by the marque’s works drivers. Tragically, Woolfe would lose his life while driving a 917 on the opening lap of the 1969 Le Mans 24 Hours.
