In Formula 1 he was World Champion twice, in 1972 (with Lotus) and 1974 (with McLaren). After a brief period racing his own Fittipaldi Formula 1 car, he transferred to Indycars in North America, becoming CART Champion in 1989. He twice won the Indianapolis 500, in 1989 and 1993.
