MotoGP and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve have signed a new three-year hosting agreement that keeps the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão through the 2029 season.
The renewal gives the venue and championship a defined planning horizon for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 events. MotoGP announced the agreement on 24 September, describing it as a further three seasons at the Algarve circuit.
A multi-year commitment for the venue
Portimão first joined the MotoGP calendar in 2020, when the championship returned to Portugal after an absence dating to 2012. The circuit hosted another event in 2021 and has held a regular calendar place from 2023 onwards.
MotoGP says the 2025 Portuguese Grand Prix attracted more than 166,000 people across the race weekend, which it described as the championship's attendance record at the venue. That figure comes from the rights holder and was not accompanied by ticket-sales, occupancy or independently audited economic-impact data.
For the circuit, a three-season commitment supports advance work on event operations, supplier planning, hospitality sales and local accommodation and transport capacity. It also gives sponsors and commercial partners a longer period over which to activate around the Portuguese round than a single-year confirmation would provide.
The published announcement does not disclose the hosting fee, contract value, public funding, revenue share, performance conditions or termination provisions. It also does not identify a new construction programme or required facility upgrade. The verified development is a renewal of event hosting rights, not a separate capital-investment announcement.
Tourism objectives remain part of the case
MotoGP, the circuit and Portuguese tourism bodies presented the event as a way to promote the Algarve internationally and generate demand for accommodation, catering, transport and other visitor services. Those are stated objectives of the parties rather than quantified outcomes from the new contract.
The late-season timing is commercially relevant to the region because it can bring visitors outside the summer peak. However, the release does not provide room-night totals, visitor origin data, local spending estimates or a methodology for measuring tourism impact. Those figures would be needed to assess the agreement's full regional value.
The renewal nevertheless removes a material scheduling uncertainty for the circuit. A confirmed MotoGP round through 2029 gives the venue a recurring international property around which it can plan staffing, safety operations, ticketing, hospitality and partner inventory.
Future calendars will establish the exact dates for each season. The agreement confirms the Portuguese Grand Prix's place at the Algarve International Circuit through 2029; it does not guarantee specific dates, title sponsors or supporting categories beyond what is announced separately.
