Team Peugeot TotalEnergies has signed Robert Shwartzman as a full-time driver for its 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship programme.
The 26-year-old will race a Peugeot 9X8 in the Hypercar class. The team has not disclosed the length or financial terms of his contract, or confirmed the complete crew combinations for next season.
Endurance return after IndyCar
Shwartzman was the fastest driver in the 2023 WEC rookie test at Bahrain and won on his championship debut at Circuit of The Americas in 2024. He then moved to IndyCar for 2025, where he secured pole position for the Indianapolis 500.
Peugeot says Shwartzman will complete several test sessions with the 9X8 during 2026 before joining the race line-up. The announcement does not give dates, locations or mileage for that programme.
The testing provides an integration period before the 2027 season, allowing the team and driver to work on systems, procedures and endurance-specific preparation. Competitive conclusions will depend on the programme's scope and the car's development.
Line-up development continues
Team principal Emmanuel Esnault described Shwartzman's speed, adaptability and experience as important to the project. That is the team's assessment; no performance targets were published with the signing.
The appointment adds a driver with Formula 1 reserve experience, junior single-seater titles and recent competition in both endurance racing and IndyCar. It also gives Peugeot a confirmed element of its 2027 line-up while wider driver allocations remain to be announced.
Shwartzman's race return will be measured against a full WEC season rather than his single-event victory in 2024. The team's testing schedule and final crew structure will shape how quickly he can contribute to the 9X8 programme.
